Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President for Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President for Student Success and Belonging at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) will serve as a key member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT). This role leads a dedicated team of full-time staff across various units, each committed to advancing student success and belonging initiatives. The units within the newly organized Student Success and Belonging team include Ethnic and Intercultural Services (Asian Pacific Student Services, Black Student Services, Chicano/Latino Student Services, LGBT Student Services), Student Employment Services, Guardian Scholars, LMU Restore, and the Intercultural Facilitators program.
In collaboration with campus partners, students, and divisional leaders, the AVP will shape and execute initiatives that enrich the student experience and promote a culture of inclusivity, success, and belonging. The AVP will be responsible for identifying and evaluating high impact practices and retention strategies that support student success. The AVP will play a pivotal role in developing and maintaining programs that support LMU's mission and strategic goals, with a focus on enhancing student belonging, retention and graduation rates.
Aligning with Loyola Marymount University's commitment to Jesuit values, the AVP will advocate for principles of learning, holistic education, and service to faith and justice. This involves actively engaging with students and student organizations, building meaningful relationships, and spearheading program development initiatives that foster a sense of community and dialogue across differences. The AVP will collaborate with key Academic Affairs units, including Career and Professional Development, Academic Support Services, and other areas to enhance the educational experience of all students. Additionally, the AVP will work closely with areas like Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to advance intersectionality and support the multiple identities of students. As a member of the Senior Vice President for Student Affairs' senior management team, the AVP will work closely with other senior leaders within the Division of Student Affairs and university.
Position Specific Accountabilities
Management of the Ethnic and Intercultural Services Portfolio:
- Provide leadership to the EIS team to advance efforts to support students as they progress toward their educational goals. The incumbent will ensure that best practices are implemented, barriers are reduced, and support systems are developed to attract and retain diverse populations.
- Supervise staff to build a cohesive and interconnected team focused on intersectional, affinity, and intercultural programming, events, and initiatives.
- Contribute to the vision, mission, and goals of the division, guiding program development and service delivery for students.
- Leverage existing assessments and data to inform decision-making and overall direction for student success and inclusive belonging.
- Use data and best practices to inform strategies. Evaluates plans, in partnership with the EIS team, to determine current effectiveness, emerging best practices, and opportunities for data-informed change.
- Prepare and oversee the budget, allocating resources in accordance with strategic and operational objectives.
Student Employment Services:
- Supervise the Director of Student Employment Services to provide leadership and administration of Student Employment Services' (SES) programs, professional development and processes for Westchester undergraduate and graduate student employment.
- Support the director in the overall strategic development and regulatory compliance for the SES at the University, a University-wide educational employment program which coordinates student employment on and off campus connecting 3000 students and 250 supervisors.
- Support the director in overseeing budgets to assure expenditures comply with established budgetary procedures and authorize expenditures in accordance with university, local and state regulations.
Inclusive Belonging and Dialogue across Difference (DxD) Initiatives:
- Provide leadership and support for the Associate Dean overseeing intercultural facilitation and a newly developed position overseeing LMU Restore.
- Foster the development of creating and realigning resources for the development of Dialogue across Difference (DxD) initiatives, fostering communication and collaboration across various areas of difference.
- Actively engage in the facilitation and coordination of DxD initiatives that encourage dialogue around diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Oversee teams who facilitate student programming that aligns with Loyola Marymount University's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Develop and evaluate programming, affinity events, recognition ceremonies, and commencement celebrations.
- Oversee the management of the Division of Student Affairs' Be A Lion Fund, established to support students encountering financial barriers to extracurricular activities.
Operational Management of Student Access and Belonging Portfolio:
- Direct, coordinate, and evaluate activities within units, including support staff engaged in administering student services and alumni engagement.
- Recruit, hire, supervise, train, and evaluate departmental personnel.
- Establish operational policies and procedures, making necessary modifications based on analysis of operations, demographics, and other research information.
- Supervise directors and the assistant dean in the day-to-day management of their various staff and student spaces.
- Plan and administer budgets, maintain financial records, and produce financial reports in coordination with the Business Operations Manager.
- Participate in divisional fundraising activities.
Divisional Leadership and Community Relations:
- Serve as the divisional point person for student related bias incidents. Provide direction to respond to bias incidents, advocate for, and support students who have been subject to bias incidents, and resolve conflicts, complaints, and relational issues impacting the campus community.
- Provide divisional leadership related to serving historically marginalized students and equity and inclusion efforts.
- Represent the division on various committees related to the student experience and inclusion.
- Promote the university by participating in community, state, and national events or meetings.
- Partner with members of the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to advance student belonging and other related initiatives to enhance student success.
- Work closely with other diversity-focused leaders and personnel across the institution, most notably with the Division of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Justice to advance intersectionality and uplift the multiple identities of students.
- Develop relationships with students, faculty, and staff to foster constructive dialogue on campus across academic and administrative divisions in service of historically marginalized student communities.

Requisite Qualifications
- Typically a Masters Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs or related field or equivalent experience is required. The incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
- Leadership Experience: A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive leadership experience in student affairs and/or higher education.
- Supervisory Experience: At least five (5) years of experience supervising and mentoring full-time student affairs professionals. Experience supervising and managing the delivery of student success services efficiently; effectively synthesizing information from various sources to be used in management decisions.
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Extensive knowledge of student development theory and a profound understanding of current issues, best practices, and trends in higher education related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
- Ability to exercise sound professional judgment and enforce University policies. Skill in interpersonal relations and a demonstrated ability to understand and work with diverse groups, including faculty, staff, parents and students.
- Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries incorporating complex, highly technical information.
- Highly developed organizational and leadership skills, including conflict management and mediation; completing administrative tasks; prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
Reasonable Expected Salary - $160,000 - $180,000. Salary offer commensurate with education and experience.
