Assistant Professor in History of Science, Philosophy of Science, or Science & Technology Studies
Location: Notre Dame, IN Open Date: Aug 23, 2024 Deadline: Oct 07, 2024 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time
Description:The Program of Liberal Studies (PLS) at the University of Notre Dame is accepting applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor in the history of science, philosophy of science, or science & technology studies to begin in August 2025, with duties including research, teaching, and service. Founded in 1950, PLS has its own tenure-line faculty drawn from various disciplines who pursue high-level scholarship while remaining committed to an integrated, liberal arts education grounded in core texts. The position carries a 2-2 course load, with core responsibilities including the Program's Great Books Seminars plus two or more of its disciplinary-based 'tutorials.' Candidates should consult the department website (https://pls.nd.edu) to identify potential tutorials they would be prepared to teach, at least one of which should be in the Science sequence. Opportunities for graduate and advanced undergraduate teaching outside the Program are also available, as well as humanities core teaching for STEM students.
Qualifications: Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in history of science, philosophy of science, science & technology studies, or a related field, or have completed all requirements for that degree by August 2025 or shortly thereafter. Area of specialization is open, but the Program has a preference for candidates who can complement, rather than replicate, existing research strengths and who would be prepared to collaborate with one or more of Notre Dame's cross-disciplinary research and teaching units, such as the Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values, the Initiative on Race and Resilience, or the Gender Studies Program. Strong publication program and evidence of an established, superior teaching record are both expected. Salary and research support are more than competitive.
This appointment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check. Applicants will be asked to identify all felony convictions and/or pending felony charges. Felony convictions do not automatically bar an individual from employment. Each case will be examined separately to determine the appropriateness of employment in the particular position. Failure to be forthcoming or dishonesty with respect to felony disclosures can result in the disqualification of a candidate. The full procedure can be viewed at https://facultyhandbook.nd.edu/?id=link-73597.

The University of Notre Dame was founded in November 1842 by Rev. Edward F. Sorin, C.S.C., a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, a French missionary order. It is located adjacent to South Bend, Indiana, the center of a metropolitan area with a population of more than 315,000. Chartered by the state of Indiana in 1844, the University was governed by the Holy Cross priests until 1967, when governance was transferred to a two-tiered, mixed board of lay and religious trustees and fellows.
