Assistant Dean for Teacher Education
The School of Education at Saint Louis University invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Teacher Education. The Assistant Dean will have administrative responsibilities and teaching responsibilities within the Teacher Education programs in the School of Education. The successful candidate will be qualified to be appointed as a non-tenure track faculty member within the School of Education.
The successful candidate will have a full-time 12-month appointment in the School of Education, starting in mid-August 2023.
Position Summary: Â Faculty in the School of Education at Saint Louis University are seeking a colleague to lead a core of faculty members focused on the BA in Education and on the MAT alternative teacher certification programs. Our faculty work with pre-service teachers in various subject areas who will ultimately educate students from birth to the secondary level. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work with colleagues to implement a redesigned BA curriculum. The faculty are in the end stages of a multiyear process of redesigning the undergraduate curriculum to focus on preparing effective and equity-minded teachers (Birth-Grade12). This new curriculum began initial implementation in Fall 2022.
The Assistant Dean will have specific leadership and administrative responsibilities related to all teacher preparation programs at the undergraduate and graduate level. These responsibilities will include organizing course schedules (with support) for the teacher education programs (BA and MAT), assigning full-time and adjunct faculty to these courses, and serving as the Schools liaison to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to ensure SLUs programs remain aligned with Missouri certification requirements. The Assistant Dean will also collaborate with the staff or faculty member who coordinates field placements.
The BA in Education program currently enrolls approximately 125 full-time students and the two-year MAT program, focused only on aspiring middle and secondary teachers, currently enrolls approximately 40 students.
Responsibilities: The successful candidates will have an opportunity to:
- Provide leadership to enhance existing programs and develop new programs that are responsive to the needs of students and communities.
- Serve a meaningful role in the management of day-to-day operations of the teacher certification programs, such as: creating and managing course schedules for all faculty; mentoring new faculty; recruiting and supervising part time faculty; supporting the operations of the Field Office; engaging in program Assessment work; and advising and supporting students.
- Teach classes to undergraduate (or MAT) students in teacher education, based on areas of expertise.
- Work directly with educator preparation program officers in the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
- Actively recruit and mentor undergraduate students and, along with the Dean and Associate Dean, support strategic initiatives in the School of Education and the St. Louis community.
- Provide support to faculty and staff in teacher education programs.
Qualifications and Experience for the Assistant Dean in Teacher Education:
Required
- Earned doctorate in Education, Curriculum & Instruction, or related field from an accredited institution.
- Leadership or administrative experience at a college or university, such as program director, department chair, or assistant/associate dean
- Five years or more of full-time teaching experience, including meaningful experience at both the post-secondary level and birth to grade 12 level.
- Demonstrated commitment to developing teacher candidates.
- Experience and/or understanding of both traditional and alternative teacher education programs.
Preferred
- Five years of experience as an educator in a Birth-Grade 12 setting.
- Experience supervising student teaching; experience working with learners with diverse needs, experiences, and backgrounds.
- Experience collecting, analyzing, and reporting assessment data for continuous school and program improvement.
- Experience with government agencies and responding to state policy changes.
- Commitment to and experience with partnering with schools, families, communities, and/or community agencies; strong relationship-building and collaboration skills.
- Knowledge of recent trends in education as they pertain to culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogies, education for social justice, and educational inequity.
- Knowledge and capability with technologies in education, including online teaching experience.
