Purpose: In alignment with Fairfield University’s Jesuit and Catholic Mission, the office of Residence Life seeks to promote the integration of each student’s mind, body and spirit in community. The Office of Residence Life supports all residential and commuter undergraduate students in providing a welcoming home and community founded in a shared sense of responsibility.
Position: The Area Coordinator position is a dynamic, live-in position responsible for student formation, community development, and facilities management of a residential area comprising 200-400 residents. In this role, Area Coordinators are seen as role models, facilitators, leaders and essential persons in the effective operations of the Residence Life program. This on-campus, live in position can be demanding of personal time especially during peak hours. The duties of the Area Coordinator may vary in each area due to the student population who resides in that area. However, the following are standard expectations with additional responsibilities based on the area you are placed.
Qualifications: Master’s degree in Student Personnel Services, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling or related field or 2-3 years post-bachelors related/transferable experiences are required. Particular emphasis will be placed on candidates who have experience with facilitation of intentional residential communities, student success and supervision.
Essential Functions:
1. Supervises and manages residential communities dedicated to specific living and learning communities. This involves:
Supervision, training, selection and staff development of five to nine Resident Assistants
Being a live-in presence for 200-400 residents within your community working day, weekend and evening hours
Mentoring and advising student concerns and appropriately referring students to resources on campus, e.g., Public Safety, Counseling Services, Financial Aid, Health Center, Campus Ministry, Academic Deans etc.
Creating a safe community through policy enforcement and awareness
Opening and closing of the Residence Halls throughout the academic year and summer
Managing their residential facility, including conducting health and safety instructions, facilities management, room changes, etc.
Serves as a Conduct Officer for Code of Conduct Violations in their area
Participating in rotating on-call duty responsibilities for crisis management
2. Coordinates and develops specific residential living and learning programs
Assist Resident Assistants in developing programs to meet the holistic needs of the students in the living and learning programs
Encourage staff and students in planning and developing programs to meet the diverse needs of the residence hall population
Manage the programming budget
Work collaboratively with supervisors and other campus partners within the LLC to achieve specific learning goals and outcomes
Oversee the planning, implementation, and assessment of living and learning programs
Utilize electronic media to create and publicize promotional materials for the LLC
Assist in living and learning programs application process (program application, housing application, selection and placement process).
Oversee initiatives to increase social and academic resources in the residence halls
Provides leadership to student staff by communicating, interpreting, and administering program goals and learning outcomes, and residence hall and University policies and procedures
Maintains visibility in the halls through regular hall visits and attendance at student leaders programs
Maintains a working knowledge of and collaborates with campus departments
Administer the departmental programming model including program approval, reviewing program proposals, providing program feedback, and tracking program requirements
Serve as a partner in the holistic development of students by working with Assistant and Associate Directors and other campus partners
3. Develops and facilitates Community Building within their residential community
Serving as a mentor and positive role model for our students by living out the Jesuit mission of Fairfield University
Participate in the spiritual and religious formation of students through collaborative work with Resident Jesuits and campus ministers particularly in hall worship services, small group and individual discussions, etc.
Advises, mentors and trains the Residential Hall Association (RHA) within their community including attending all meetings, programs and training sessions
Coordinates all developmental programming that complements our programming vision statement that occurs within their communities.
Plans and Implements late night weekend programming for all residential students
Oversee the budgets of the community
Holds students accountable for code of conduct actions within their community
4. Participates and supports the Office of Residence Life on such projects as:
Student leader development and training
Recruitment for other key Residence Life initiatives (Resident Assistant Recruitment Sophomore Residential Colleges, Build-A-House, etc.)
Housing Assignments and Lottery
Participating on committees designated by the Director of Residence Life
Other duties as assigned
5. Promotes safe and secure working conditions
Promoting the proper utilization of equipment, staff and materials
Reporting immediately unsafe working conditions to supervisor.
This position is based at Fairfield University’s Fairfield, CT campus and is not eligible for immigration assistance.

Requirements: The Area Coordinator is an 11-month full-time live-in required position. Benefits include 12-month housing, semi-furnished apartment with utilities, meal stipend, competitive salary, health benefits, and tuition remission. A driver’s license is required. Night and weekend responsibilities required.
