Lower School Dean of Academics & Faculty Development 12 Month Position Beginning August 2023
Position: Lower School Dean of Academics & Faculty Development Reports to: Lower School Division Head FLSA: Exempt, full-time Salary Range: $80,000 - $110,000 annually, commensurate with education and experience
Convent of the Sacred Heart, seeks a Lower School Dean of Academics & Faculty Development for Grades PK-4 to begin in August 2023.
Sacred Heart seeks an experienced candidate who has strong academic, administrative, and interpersonal skills. The Lower School Dean of Academics & Faculty Development works with the Head of Lower School, the Support Services team, individual grade teams, the DEI team, and Middle and Upper School Academic Deans to ensure that the Goals and Criteria of the Convent of the Sacred Heart are implemented for the education of the whole child.
Required:
An understanding of the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart as well as the ability to articulate them
Five or more years of teaching experience, and/or administrative/leadership experience
Knowledge of Early Childhood and Elementary Education
Masters Degree
Experience teaching several different elementary grade levels
A demonstrated interest in promoting the success of students
Ability to work cooperatively and independently as needed
A demonstrated commitment to addressing social justice, diversity, equity, and anti-racist, anti-bias education in the curriculum through lessons, actions, and discussions
Strong technology skills
Effective writing, editing, and public speaking skills
Ability to demonstrate inquiry-based pedagogy, project-based learning, and backwards design
A demonstrated interest and/or previous experience in implementing a program of differentiated instruction in the classroom
Ability to work during the summer (Vacations: 1 week vacation for spring break, 1 week vacation for Christmas break, 4 weeks vacation during the summer)
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Academics & Faculty Development:
Coordinate the Lower School academic program to ensure continuity and vertical alignment across all subjects from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 4
Support teachers in continuing to review and enhance their curriculum based on research and best practices, and observe lessons to provide guidance and feedback on curriculum
Attend Support Services meetings and review differentiation techniques being used in the classroom and develop new methods for challenging, supporting, and engaging students in the classroom
Collaborate with the LS Curriculum Developer and faculty on creating curriculum maps and pacing guides for each grade level, and review these each semester
Recommend and implement in-house professional development by conducting teacher and/or faculty meetings when appropriate, and support faculty in determining appropriate outside professional development
Collaborate with the DEI Team and LS Admin Team on social justice, diversity, equity, and anti-racist, anti-bias education in the curriculum as well as in developing and implementing professional development
Assist in analyzing data to determine how results of standardized testing and other assessments (classroom and schoolwide) can support in improving curriculum and assessing each student’s individual strengths and goals
Work with the Lower School teachers to understand the results of standardized testing so they can cover areas that need to be further addressed and therefore enhance the curriculum
Research speakers, training programs, and academic programs in order to keep up-to-date on the most current studies in regards to curriculum and best practices, and then confer with the Head of Lower School
Work with the LS Tech Integrationist and LS Tech Specialist to manage the platforms we use, such as Literably and Dreambox
Partner with the LS Math Specialist to update the math program in accordance with the most recent edition of Singapore Math program Math in Focus
Oversee and manage the implementation of Fountas & Pinnell Classroom reading program in Grades 1-4
Collaborate weekly with the LS Admin Team and LS Curriculum Developer
Collaborate with the Middle and Upper School Academic Deans to manage assessment data across the school, develop processes for faculty growth and renewal, and coordinate the whole school academic program
Work with faculty on developing, implementing, and enhancing the STREAM curriculum for Pre-K – Grade 4, confer with the Head of the Lower School on any changes to these programs, and lead the yearly reviews of our STREAM Program
Research, advise on, and plan/organize workshops for parents/caregivers
Support teachers and administrators to prepare for family conferences by managing sign-ups, assigning locations, and sharing best practices
Assist in communicating information about the curriculum to parents through monthly newsletters
Correspond with and/or meet with parents to talk through curriculum as needed
Facilitate individual grade team meetings on a rotational basis to determine efficacy of curriculum, explore new ideas, and identify opportunities for support
Maintain and create materials for faculty posted on the Lower School Hub, an internal resource website
Provide coaching and feedback for classroom teachers, multi-grade teachers, and learning specialists on an as-needed basis
Administrative:
Support the Head of Lower School in implementing administrative decisions
Collaborate with the Head of Lower School in setting/reviewing Lower School policies
Update, review, and edit Lower School documents, including the curriculum guide
Oversee the process of developing curriculum blurbs for progress reports and editing these blurbs
Support the Head of Lower School in developing a schedule that is reflective of curricular priorities and meets the developmental needs of the Lower School students by offering feedback based on research
Help to plan Lower School events, including Parent-Teacher Conferences and Curriculum Nights
Support the Sacred Heart Admissions Team at in-person and virtual events
Help with coverage as needed
