CHARACTERISTICS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Principal must be a practicing Catholic who fully understands, embraces, and can articulate the Catholic identity and mission of SMCC. Achieving academic excellence requires that the Principal possess an unwavering commitment to student development and success. S/he must be able to work collaboratively to direct and nurture the School's faculty and academic support staff. S/he must set high standards yet have an accessible and approachable style. S/he must be an outstanding communicator who builds positive relationships with all constituents. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for the School's Catholic identity and culture, curriculum, student life and activities, discipline, safety, faculty evaluation, and professional development.
SMCC operates under a President-Principal model of leadership. The Principal serves as the School's academic leader and has both the authority and responsibility for the daily educational operations. The Principal works collaboratively with and is accountable to the President. The Principal develops and implements programs, policies, regulations, and procedures that ensure the School is a teaching and learning environment where faith is evident, learning is valued, and service becomes a habit of the heart. The specific responsibilities of the position require that the Principal:
Spiritual Leadership
Ensures that the School's Catholic identity, including the IHM and Holy Cross heritage, is made manifest and continually cultivated among faculty, staff, students, and parents.
Collaborating with the President provides faith-based leadership to the School community.
Fosters a Christian environment within the School, reflecting the School's mission and Catholic values
Provides opportunities for spiritual reflection and religious growth for faculty and staff.
Works with the Director of Campus Ministry to ensure that all students have opportunities for spiritual growth through daily prayer, liturgies, retreats, and service opportunities.
Instructional Leadership
Works collaboratively with the School Improvement Committee to design and maintain an academic program of the highest quality that meets or exceeds all applicable Diocesan, state, and federal standards and prepares students for college and beyond.
Directs the master scheduling of courses, teachers, students, and educational resources.
Ensures opportunities for the professional development of faculty and staff.
Provides for the induction and mentoring of new faculty.
Ensures that teacher performance and professional status are regularly evaluated.
Leads the continued efforts to meet the needs of all learners by expanding Academic Support efforts and resources and growing the St. Andre Bessette Open Doors Inclusion program
Oversees student registration and academic support services.
Conducts conflict resolution for students, faculty, and parent concerns related to educational and social/disciplinary issues.
Approves the purchase of academic supplies and equipment following the School's purchasing policy.
Administrative Leadership
Along with the President, provides leadership to the School community concerning the School's vision, mission, philosophy, and goals.
Acts as the academic Head of School and is the School's representative to the Vicariate, the Archdiocese, and the State on educational matters.
Ensures the implementation of all School Board-approved formational and educational policies and Archdiocesan policies and regulations.
Works with the Director of Operations and Dean of Students to ensure the safety of campus facilities and operations.
Oversees the development and implementation of campus ministry programs, student services, college advising programs, extracurricular activities and supervision, and student conduct.
Interviews, hires, and prepares contracts for signature by the President for the teaching staff, Campus Minister, Director of Athletics and Campus Operations, Dean of Students, College Advising, Academic Support, and other academic administrative personnel as needed.
Evaluates the work of the academic support staff based on the mission of the School, job descriptions, and identified performance goals.
Works with the President, the Business Manager, and the Board's Finance Committee to develop the annual operational budget.
Provides regular reports to the School Board regarding academic operations.
Maintains regular communication with all constituents of the school community and works to build and sustain positive relationships with all members of the community.

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will be a leader with a passion for Catholic education. S/he must: 1) be a practicing Catholic who can provide a letter of recommendation from their parish pastor; 2) have a minimum of a Master's degree in Educational Leadership; 3) possess or can obtain Michigan's basic endorsement for a school administrator certificate of Elementary/Secondary Administrator K-12; 4) provide evidence of at least three years of successful teaching experience; and 5) possess or be able to complete the Catechist Formation Certification as directed by the Archdiocese of Detroit's Department of Evangelization, Catechesis, and Schools.
