Description: The Director of Counseling works closely with the Principal to provide systems of support for all students to address their personal and academic needs. An 11-month role, the Director of Counseling supervises the school’s Counseling Team, develops and implements programs to address and support students, and regularly interacts with the school community and outside agencies that provide resources for students. The Director of Counseling will provide preventive and in-the moment services for emotional, behavioral, academic, personal, or social concerns. The Director of Counseling reports to the Principal.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Supervise the school’s Counseling Team comprised of two Social Workers
Manage a caseload of students, who are provided with individual, as-needed counseling services.
Foster a trauma informed school environment to best support community in all areas of functioning.
Respond to crisis situations
Refer students to appropriate evaluations, programs, and services
Develop and implement a program that supports students in specific, needs-based small groups to address issues that impact school performance and college readiness.
Engage in on-going follow-up with students, teachers, school staff, and families
Analyze student data to identify at-risk students and routinely monitor their progress
Initiate and manage outreach to outside resources that can complement and enhance the counseling services provided to students.
Develop, coordinate, and/or lead workshops/classes as needed on topics that support students’ social-emotional health and academic success.
Support and maintain all reporting and records related to Child Protection for the school community.

Adolescent-focused training and experience
Clinical expertise in service delivery and assessment
Knowledge of trauma
Demonstrated experience with management of clinicians and development of programming
Strong interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, parents, and the community
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Sensitivity to working in a diverse multicultural environment
Understanding of the Catholic faith, beliefs, and practices
Adherence to all ethical standards of the National Associationof Social Workers (NASW), American School Counselor Association (ASCA), American Counseling Association (ACA) or specific licensure ethical standards relevant to their training in addition to the policies of the school.
Education and Experience
Masters level or doctoral degree in school counseling or a related counseling field
3-5 years of professional experience working with adolescents in a school or school-related setting
At least two years of supervisory experience in a school or school-related setting
School counselor or license preferred (Don Bosco will provide access to clinical supervision hours and/or funding for supervision hours)

Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School (DBCR) is a private, Catholic, college-prep high school that is a partnership between the Archdiocese of Washington, the Salesians of Don Bosco, and the Cristo Rey Network. DBCR was founded in 2007 in Takoma Park, MD, and now serves 400 students of diverse backgrounds from financially challenged families who live in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. DBCR also has a unique Corporate Work Study Program that places students in local businesses and non-profits where they learn the expectations of the corporate world and earn over 50% of the cost of their education.
