Job Description:
MSMU's Dean of Nursing is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the Nursing programs, MSMU's largest academic area in a variety of aspects. Duties include evaluating faculty members, evaluating and improving academic programs and making sure the academic standards of the programs are met. The dean must ensure that the clinical programs meet the requirements of the CA state board of nursing, CCNE accreditation. The dean oversees coordination of student clinical placement and experiential learning.
The dean is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of the nursing program meet and maintain the accreditation standards. She/he reviews data such as student retention and make and implement plans to improve recruitment, retention and the student experience. The dean oversees the finances of the department, which can include seeking funding and grants to fund the nursing program.
Position Annual Hiring Salary Range: $114,000 - $117,000
Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate's qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Facilitate the accomplishment of the scholarships of teaching, research, creative, and scholarly activities.
Engage clear and effective leadership to support recruitment efforts to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion among staff, faculty, and students.
Be the academic and administrative leader of the Nursing Department.
Report to the Provost or appropriate University offices.
Administer the Nursing Department according to the University and Nursing Department Bylaws and policies.
Keep the administrative offices of the University and the faculty fully informed concerning the educational and financial status of the Nursing Department.
Maintain effective relationships with alumni and relevant internal and external constituents.
Work with internal and external constituents to assure support for the Nursing Department.
Function as chief fiscal and personnel manager of the unit.
Be responsible for all cooperative programs involving the Nursing department and other units of the University.
Represent the nursing department, formally and informally, to the University, community and the world.
Oversee academic, research, and practice and service programs with other agencies.
Oversee evaluation of faculty and staff.
Make recommendations for initial appointment, re-appointment, and tenure.
Be responsible for such additional duties as may be assigned by the Board of Trustees or University Administration Offices.
Facilitate faculty development and resources for the use of technology in education, practice, and research.
Facilitate the presence of faculty as presenters and organizational leaders at local, national, and international levels.
Facilitate implementation of the department and university diversity plans.
Advance the department to achieve the strategic plan of the university.
Implement an Evaluation Plan for the Nursing Department.
Requirements:
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
A well-developed sense of integrity and ethical comportment.
A doctoral degree (preferably, but not required, in nursing). Must be eligible for registration with the California Board of Nursing
A minimum of five years' experience in an administrative position within an academic setting.
Progressive experience in nursing higher education, research, grant acquisition and success leading an academic organization.
National and/or state certification in any of the specialty areas represented in the MSMU graduate educational track offerings.
Demonstrated success as a team player who can engage successfully with colleagues from within and external to the University.
