St. Anselm’s Abbey School seeks a full-time Drama teacher and theatre director beginning in late August 2022. Duties include teaching courses in drama and acting to students in grades 7 through 12, as well directing three annual stage productions. 

Responsibilities:

• Teach a year-long general Drama course to all students in grade 7, and electives to students in Grades 8, 9, and 11/12.
• Collaborate with colleagues in grade-level teaching teams and in the Fine Arts Department; attend faculty meetings and parent-teacher conferences; and participate in occasional special assemblies or events.
• Assess student progress consistently and constructively. Communicate proactively and regularly with parents, administrators and other faculty about student progress.
• Manage all aspects of three annual student productions: an all-school musical (in collaboration with a music director), an Upper School play, and a Middle School play. Responsibilities include selecting appropriate repertoire in coordination with the Department Chair and school administration; auditions and casting; rehearsals; sets, lighting, sound, and costumes; and logistical and artistic aspects of performances (typically three performances per production).
• Contribute as needed to other areas of school life, which may include serving as a club moderator, advisor, or lunch monitor; providing technical support for assemblies or other events in the theater space; and other duties as assigned by the Headmaster.

Qualifications:

• At least an undergraduate degree, preferably in theatre, education, or a related field.
• Teaching experience strongly preferred, particularly at the middle school and/or high school level.
• The ability to work an adjusted schedule to incorporate after-school rehearsals (typical hours are 10:00-6:00 daily) and some weekends in the rehearsal and performance of student productions.
• Some background in theatre is essential; experience directing students in stage productions is strongly preferred.
• Experience running a scene shop, managing costumes, and training students to manage technical aspects of a production would be a particular asset.
• Strong classroom-management and community-building skills, and the ability to relate to and inspire adolescent young men.
• Enthusiasm for promoting the spiritual, personal, and intellectual development of young men, and an openness to the mission of Benedictine and Catholic education.
