The primary purpose of the Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant is to deliver comprehensive individualized health care that includes diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, patient education, and health promotion/disease prevention.
The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant works primarily to assess and diagnose problem; interpret medical and clinical information; determine the need for other diagnostic tests; and develop a plan of care based on patient history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests when indicated. He/she will prescribe and/or modify treatment plans and/or medication.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
(1) Elicit health histories and perform physical assessments to evaluate student’s health. (2) Order laboratory tests, X-rays and other diagnostic tests. (3) Formulate assessments and plans, including prescribing medications and other modes of treatment and referrals as appropriate. (4) Plan and coordinate patient care to ensure students’ improvement (5) Practice with a focus on health promotion, prevention of disease, maintenance of wellness and to promote students’ empowerment over their own long-term health & wellness. (6) Consult with the collaborating physician as necessary for patient care decisions. (7) Participate in HC staff meetings and programs to ensure optimal clinic performance. (8) Adhere to OSHA and Employee Health Standards to ensure a safe patient and workplace environment. (9) Maintain CPR (CPR for a professional rescuer) and other continuing education to maintain licensure. (10) Provide immunizations and TB skin testing to students. (11) Maintain reliable personal attendance and punctuality to ensure a smooth, efficient clinic flow and maintain consistent clinical hours of operation. (12) Supervise and coordinate learning experiences for CA students. (13) Maintain a safe, efficient, confidential, patient-friendly working environment to ensure a quality experience for patients. (14) Publically speak within the university community on health related topics. (15) Participate in Wellness Center committees and projects. (16) Enthusiastically accept and support the mission of UDM. (17) Perform other duties as assigned or requested. (18) Initiate EMR in Health Clinic. (19) Support credentialing for private insurances. (20) Provide health care services to Detroit Mercy employees. (21) Support expansion efforts of clinic as necessary. (22) All other duties as assigned.
Master’s of Science in Nursing or Master’s of Science Physician Assistant.
Two years to five years of similar or related experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to function independently and have excellent oral and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills. - Ability to work flexibly in a team setting and strong sense of being a team player. - Ability to function autonomously in providing clinical care to students as supervising physician is off sight but accessibly by phone. - Effectively run multiple aspects of clinic work while providing health care to students. - A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. - Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or can be of a personal or sensitive nature.
Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).
Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
Licensure is obtained by completing a Master’s degree in Nursing/Physician Assistant or equivalency (the only equivalency to the Master’s degree is current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner) and a National Certification which requires successful completion of a nationally accredited examination.
UHPPM 1-56 requires the newly hired non-physician providers to apply for credentialing and privileging at the time of hire.
Certified as advanced practice nurse by the American Nurse Credentialing Commission; Licensed by the State of Michigan as an Advanced Practice Nurse.
