The Woods Academy in Bethesda, Maryland, is seeking an experienced, full-time K-8 Spanish teacher who will join a team of five world language professionals.
The Woods Academy is an inclusive Catholic community preparing boys and girls to lead lives of significance. The school serves approximately 300 students in the Washington DC Metropolitan area, including Montgomery County Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The Woods is where children come to discover their talents, grow in their faith, challenge themselves, and foster a strong desire to lead lives of significance. The school provides a comprehensive education for children from Montessori Pre-School to Eighth Grade with strong academics, a daily foreign language program, hands-on technology instruction, and a well-rounded arts program, all conducted in a small classroom setting.

Fluency in Spanish required
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in teaching and/or world language, Masters degree preferred
Demonstrated solid knowledge of 5-8 grammar concepts in English and French and ability to recognize pitfalls of non-native learners
Three years or more of teaching experience in the 5-8 environment
Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in technology
Plan and deliver units of study that are rigorous and age appropriate.
Develop student understanding and appreciation of the culture in countries where Spanish is spoken.
Demonstrate creativity and flexibility when implementing lesson plans and teaching classes.
Observe student progress with regard to aural, speaking, reading and writing skills for each grade taught.
Use results of formal testing and other assessments to evaluate student progress and instructional effectiveness.
Adapt curriculum and teaching methods to accommodate a variety of different learning styles (differentiation).
Prepare progress reports and report cards at various intervals throughout the academic year and maintain an accurate record of student progress.
Assist the world language team in setting up for cultural events.
Keep parents informed of classroom activities and units of study through the Woods Academy’s web-based information portal.
Clearly communicate expectations and classroom rules to students and reinforce and maintain the Woods Academy’s culture of high academic and behavioral expectations.
Attend and participate in school events outside of regular school hours.
Attend and participate in grade-level meetings and school-planned professional development.
Seek out opportunities for professional development that will enhance personal and program goals.
Maintain ongoing strong collaborative relationships with other members of the world language team to foster a culture of collegiality and commitment.
Maintain thoughtful, respectful and positive relations with the school community as a whole.
