Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School is a diocesan secondary school serving 275 students, located in San Luis Obispo, CA. MCP seeks a College Counselor whose emphasis will be on a partnership with families, teachers and students by primarily serving, supporting and advocating for our students. The successful candidate can support and enhance the mission of MCP; has strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; the ability to respond effectively and creatively to the needs of a diverse and expectant student and parent population; knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admission and financial aid policies and related procedures; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with school stakeholders and internal partners; fosters a healthy work-ethic; and shows a capacity for autonomy and independence.
Necessary skills include excellence in written and verbal communication, organization and time-management, and the ability to meet deadlines. Experience in college admissions or high school college counseling, teaching experience or workshop facilitation, and significant literacy with customer relations software specific for college admissions (e.g., Naviance) is essential for success at MCP.
The College Counseling Specialist reports to the Director of Academic Affairs and is responsible for administering all aspects of the college search and admissions process, as well as the internal high school scholarship program. Compensation is based on education and experience.
Job Requirements include: - Educating students and parents regarding the college search and admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing. - Offering yearly College Planning Workshops for each grade level (9-12). - Advising 9th, 10th, and 11th graders on curricular choices in the classroom setting in the spring semester each year in coordination with the Director of Academic Affairs. - Arranging and meeting with college admissions representatives and facilitating meetings between college representatives and our students. Serving as a liaison with college admissions offices throughout the year. - Serving as the University of California and NCAA point of contact maintaining new and updated course approvals on a yearly basis in coordination with the Director of Academic Affairs. - Maintaining and disseminating information on standardized tests, e.g., Plan, PSAT, SAT, ACT, and TOEFL. - Working with Registrar to maintain records on seniors, including GPA's and transcripts, sending college application files through Naviance. - Writing an official school recommendation for each senior as per his or her three-week formal written request. The College Counselor also completes all School Report and mid-year report forms requested by colleges, including evaluations of students including but not limited to the Common Application report form evaluation through Naviance. - As the Scholarship Coordinator for the school, maintaining an active listing of national, regional, and local scholarships. Coordinate the Boy’s State and Girl’s State application and interview process and the local scholarship opportunities.
The position of College Counselor contributes to the growth of MCP in a mission-aligned way as a part of the strategic development plan for student success. The main qualifications of a successful applicant include:
- 3+ years’ experience in full time counseling - Experience in Catholic education setting - Technologically literate, including Microsoft Office software, and other communications tools like Naviance, etc. - Excellent oral and written communication skills - Relationship-builder, energetic and enthusiastic, welcoming attitude - Bachelor’s degree - PPS Credential - MA Counseling
