Principal St. Columbkille School Los Angeles, CA
Start Date: January 2019 or no later than July 2019
St. Columbkille School has been serving the South Los Angeles community for over ninety-three years. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles established the parish and school in 1923 and in September of that year the school opened under the direction of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. The past ninety-one years have seen a dramatic change in the student make up of St. Columbkille. The school primarily catered to working-class European-American families when it first opened, then shifted to a predominantly African-American student population in the middle part of the last century and now is mostly comprised of Latino and African-American students. The school was accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Western Catholic Education Association (WCEA) in the Spring of 2009 and received a full six-year term of accreditation until the Summer of 2021.
St. Columbkille School is one of three STEM Triangle schools, along with Ascension and Nativity, all located within a 5-mile radius of one another in South Los Angeles, a community beleaguered by poverty, crime and struggling public schools. For nearly 100 years, these three Catholic schools have provided the positive alternative to these negative factors, providing pockets of hope, stability and opportunity for upward mobility through education for thousands of inner-city children.
Currently serving a total of 265 students in the 2018-19 school year, the school has a bold vision of ensuring that its Catholic education is a key part of the solution to the Achievement Gap that is entrenched in the urban cores of South Los Angeles. The school offers a rigorous academic program of value to students and families of the local communities. Its aim is that every student will realize a future full of hope through the opportunity that education and faith can bring forth. Additional information regarding this incredible school community can be found on the school’s website here.
The next Principal will be an innovative and inspiring leader who can continue to inspire a strong team of educators while implementing rigorous and effective academic programming and design models for curriculum evaluation and assessment. The candidate we seek is a culturally proficient, faith-filled, instructional leader committed to working with children in an urban setting. He or she displays a demonstrated commitment to working with predominately Latino and African-American children and families in an urban school setting. Five years of experience and current teacher credentialing required.
Candidates are expected to be available to assume the responsibilities no later than July 2019. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. To apply, please submit the following materials, confidentially and as separate PDF attachments in one email to Michael Furey. Please include St. Columbkille School in subject field.
