2019 Principal Search for Bishop O’Dowd High School, Oakland, California
Bishop O’Dowd High School (O’Dowd) is a Catholic college preparatory school owned and operated by the Diocese of Oakland with a current enrollment of 1,250 students. O’Dowd strives to develop young men and women of competence, conscience, and compassion through an integrated academic, spiritual, and co-curricular program. Guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ, O’Dowd educates its diverse student body to build a more just, joyful and sustainable world through core values as outlined in its charism: Finding God in all things calls us to Community in Diversity, Strength of Character, Academic Excellence, Kinship with Creation, Social Justice, and Joy.
The school operates under a President-Principal model. The principal reports to President J. D. Childs who was recently appointed to the position by Bishop Barber after serving the past two years as principal. The school’s three strategic-minded Associate Principals are leading school-side work in this interim year while a search begins for the permanent principal who will begin in July 2019.
O’Dowd seeks a dynamic and collaborative leader for the position of principal. The principal will oversee all aspects of the curriculum, including co-curricular programming that complements and enhances the academic program, striving to form the O’Dowd student according to graduation outcomes in alignment with the school charism. O’Dowd engages a team of 95 faculty, 70 of which have advanced degrees, who are committed to innovative approaches to education of the whole person and promoting the value of multiple-perspectives in this uniquely diverse and Catholic community.
The school is embarking on bold institutional priorities that will deepen its commitment to its charism and Catholic identity, drive educational excellence and innovation, and seize unprecedented opportunities to optimize its facilities to enhance the student experience. O’Dowd’s position in the educational landscape of the East Bay is compelling and enrollment momentum is strong. This is an exceptional opportunity for a leader to partner with President Childs on the next chapter of the school’s bright success.
The position profile is under development and will be posted shortly.
