The Assistant Principal for Academics is responsible for implementing the total instructional program and assists the principal with implementation of the school strategic plan, Vision 2020. The assistant principal has responsibility for ensuring a positive school climate and maintaining positive relationships with students and parents, while inspiring a dynamic instructional staff. The assistant principal must be a relationship builder, an effective communicator, and a collaborative leader. The assistant principal must embrace the mission and values of the Catholic Church, the Diocese of Birmingham in Alabama, and St. John Paul II Catholic High School. The assistant principal is responsible for performing all tasks assigned by the principal. This person functions as the building administrator in the absence of the principal.
Duties and Responsibilities
Implements the instructional program according to the established curriculum, school goals and Vision 2020 strategic plan.
Collaborates with department chairs for course continuity, implementation, review and updates; convenes department head meetings as needed.
Provides leadership in planning, implementing and evaluating the instructional program.
Reviews lesson plans and mentors teachers regarding course implementation and instructional practices.
Supervises the instructional program through various methods including but not limited to classroom visits, teacher conferences, model teaching, and frequent teacher interaction.
Provides leadership in and encourages innovative teaching techniques, effective utilization of technology and community resources, and class organization.
Develops and monitors long-range planning for all curriculum and academic programs.
Ensures fair and consistent implementation of school policies regarding homework and academic intervention.
Consults with faculty and collaborates with the principal on school policy additions and revisions related to the instructional program.
Evaluates the curriculum annually to ensure compliance with state, diocesan, and AdvancED accreditation standards and to ensure a dynamic instructional program that offers relevant content with innovative delivery.
Assists with establishing class schedules in consultation with other staff members.
Responsible for coordination and implementation of the Summer Bridge program in consultation with department chairs and instructional faculty.
Models the use of data in evaluation and staff development.
Consults with the principal, to assist in the process of interviewing, evaluating and selecting new staff members.
Assists with orientation of new faculty at the school.
Establishes the annual and strategic staff development plan; collaborative planning and coordination of staff development in support of improved teacher effectiveness and increased student achievement.
Shares with the principal the responsibility for evaluating and documenting staff performance.
Collaborates with the principal regarding interactions, observations, and recommendations regarding faculty performance.
Assists with student orientation.
Serves as a member of the leadership team to establish and implement school policies and goals, including Vision 2020.
Chairs meetings of the JPII Academic Council.
Coordinates school instructional resources.
Sets high expectations for utilization of parent and community resources to supplement the instructional program.
Demonstrates collaborative leadership by involving staff members in planning, reviewing, evaluating and amending the instructional program
Demonstrates collaborative leadership in the analysis and use of student achievement data.
Utilizes data in decision making; mentors staff in utilization of data-based decision making.
Evaluates the curriculum to ensure compliance with state, diocesan, and accreditation standards.
Collaborates with principal, counselors, teachers, parents, and students to develop solutions that meet the learning needs of all students.
Collaborates with teachers and the guidance office to evaluate and monitor student performance.
Supervises staff members responsible for students utilizing online courses to meet academic deficiencies.
Provides leadership in innovative instructional practices.
Coordinates the School Improvement Team (SIT) and faculty committees necessary to maintain accreditation.
Leads the collaboration for long-range planning for curriculum and academic programs
Assigns instructional staff to specific courses.
Assists in the completion of records and reports and in the supervision and inventory of supplies, textbooks, and materials.
Manages the instructional budget; collaborates with the principal to ensure best use of available resources including personnel, instructional materials, and staff development.
Coordinates exams and establishes the testing schedule.
Coordinates the Advanced Placement program.
Assists with the annual review of the Faculty Handbook, the Family Handbook, and the Course Description booklet.
Assists with the development of the school calendar.
Collaborates with the principal, for the observation and evaluation of faculty in accordance with the guidelines of the Diocese of Birmingham Professional Growth Plan and the AdvancED ELEOT tool.
Serves as a member of the school admissions team.
Supervises the selection and purchase of textbooks in accordance with school needs and diocesan cycle and guidelines.
Collaborates with the guidance department and RenWeb administrator regarding the student course registration process.
Responsible for coordinating and facilitating the development of the master schedule: courses, teacher assignments, and student placement.
Collaborates with the principal, coordinating the assignment of staff to support supervision for hallways and lunchroom, arrival and dismissal, and extra curricular activities, including clubs and organizations, athletics, Parent Association activities, and other events as necessary.
Assists the principal with student discipline when necessary.
Works with teachers and the Athletic Director to ensure student eligibility for extracurricular activities, including athletics, are in compliance with school policy.
Assists the appropriate school personnel to ensure that building safety guidelines are followed.
Participates in school leadership and administrative meetings as directed by the principal.
Schedules time to be known to the students through visibility in hallways, classrooms, and school activities/functions.
Facilitates and participates as needed in meetings with parents, students and teachers to facilitate a successful school experience and to resolve issues in a timely manner.
Communicates often and clearly to staff, administration, students, and parents to ensure clarity, consistency, and fairness in the academic program and all school functions.
QUALIFICATIONS • Masters degree or higher in educational administration • Certification in high school administration issued by the state of Alabama, or qualifications to receive certification • 2-5 years administrative experience at the high school level • A practicing Catholic REPORTS TO: Principal
